Full Version: PlayStation 2 Port?

Hi, fellow mGBA users.

I'm satisfied with the progress of mGBA so far, it's better than any of the other emulators I have tried on the Wii Homebrew development scene. However, when I was looking around the mGBA website, I saw that there is a working PSP port of mGBA, and seeing as the PSP is on roughly the same raw-power level as the PS2[my PS2 was beside my TV at the time, in case you're wondering "where'd he get the PS2 from?"], I thought about a PS2 port. I mean, there is a PS2 Homebrew scene (FreeMcBoot), and the PS2 is definitely capable. I looked up the specs and the PSP is only slightly (33MHz) faster than the PS2, and they use very similar components (PSP's CPU is basically a mini Emotion Engine, the PS2 CPU). Maybe I'm missing something, but the majority of devices emulating a past machine only needs to be around 10x faster than the original, tops (then there are rare cases like the Xbox (original) emulator/s, where it needs to be crazy powerful to run these games in comparison).

Is GBA Emulation a special case, or is there just no interest in a PS2 port? I'm just curious.

Thanks for reading.
The PSP version is far too slow to be usable, unfortunately. Given this, I highly doubt putting in time for a PS2 version is worthwhile. Is PS2 homebrew even still active these days?

Por favor Trabalhe em uma versão para Playstation 2!

Yes endrift is still some homebrews developed for the Playstation 2, there is even 2 GBA emulators for Playstation 2 (http://psx-scene.com/forums/f19/preview-...s2-106568/ and http: / /psx-scene.com/forums/f19/preview-gpsp-port-ps2-106568/index20.html#post1169756)!

Please Work on a version for Playstation 2!
When I get around to writing the MIPS dynarec, I can try porting it (I have a FreeMCBoot'd PS2), but before then it will assuredly be too slow.

E] Oh goodness, the gcc version used in the ps2toolchain is far too old. I'd need 4.3 or newer for it to compile at all, and preferably 4.8 or newer.
What about a PS3 port? RetroArch is already on the platform and is well liked. The VBA core doesn't work well with some games.
I don't have a homebrewed PS3, and I heard that the toolchain used for homebrew is also either ancient or illegal to obtain (???), based on what I heard from the RA people. Makes it a bit hard to port things myself, unfortunately.

E] I think I have a CECH-2001A, so I could potentially do a hardware hack, but that sounds a bit more involved than I really want to get with my PS3.

E2] wtf, I just googled it and apparently it's gcc 4.7? That's almost certainly new enough. I have no idea what squarepusher was on about.
